A pretty, bustling town with plenty of character, Kratie is a popular stopover point on the overland route into Cambodia from Laos.
It is known for its small population of rare Irrawaddy dolphins. There are thought to be only 75 remaining and conservationists are working hard to preserve their habitat. Fortunately for visitors, they are reasonably easy to spot as they arc above the river waters, particularly during the dry season.
A short drive south of Kratie, the sleepy town of Chhlong makes an alternative base as it has an interesting market and some attractive colonial buildings: these include the gorgeous Relais de Chhlong, a stunning French mansion overlooking the Mekong, which has recently been converted into a hotel.
